209 Long Neck Point in Darien, CT, was built in 1866 as a carriage barn for Hugh W. Collender, a Guilded Age billiard table manufacturer. Collender’s Stamford-based factory helped establish his fortune, and in 1872, he acquired much of Long Neck Point.
Over time, the carriage barn was converted into a residential home, undergoing extensive renovations while carefully preserving many of its original architectural details. Among its notable past owners was actor Christopher Plummer, who played Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music.
Today, the home retains its 19th-century character across 7,700 square feet of living space. Oversized archways, originally designed to accommodate carriages, remain intact, as do the original barn doors and windows. Through double Mahogany front doors, the home opens onto a grand hall, ideal for entertaining. The formal living room, dining room, and family room feature 16-foot ceilings, rustic chandeliers, and original hardwood floors.
Upstairs, the landing leads to a loft with exposed wooden beams, a fireplace, and two Juliet balconies. This flexible space has been used as a second-floor family room, playroom, or craft area. The primary suite includes cathedral ceilings, a gas fireplace, and a private outdoor balcony overlooking the pool and terrace. Four additional en suite bedrooms complete the second floor.
With over 3,500 square feet of outdoor living space, the property offers a private beach, a custom pool, and a spa, all set against the backdrop of Long Island Sound.
