In a landmark transaction, a historic Greenwich estate with connections to former President Donald Trump has claimed the title of the highest-priced property in the area for 2024. This opulent waterfront home at 21 Vista Drive (photos) sold for an impressive $31.5 million in a private sale, concluding a 15-year journey of on-and-off market appearances.

A Presidential Legacy

Nestled on 5.8 acres of prime waterfront land, the Georgian colonial-style mansion boasts a rich history. Donald Trump and his late ex-wife, Ivana Trump, purchased the estate in 1982 for $4 million, equivalent to over $13 million today when adjusted for inflation. Ivana retained ownership after their divorce in 1992 and sold the property in 1998.

Known for her distinctive design sensibilities, Ivana adorned the home with lavish red and gold interiors inspired by New York’s Plaza Hotel. Her unique touch transformed the mansion into a strikingly opulent residence during her tenure.

An Era of Transformation

In 1998, financier Robert Steinberg and his wife Suzanne acquired the property for $15 million. They embarked on significant renovations, expanding the home by 5,000 square feet and adding luxury features, such as an indoor lap pool. The Steinbergs opted for a more modern aesthetic, replacing the Plaza-like interiors with neutral white tones and contemporary finishes.

Originally built in 1939 for Robert Hillas, the president of the Frederick H. Levey printing company, the estate was once known as “Haroldyn House.” Today, it stands as a showcase of both historical charm and modern luxury. Among its many highlights are a deep-water dock, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a tennis court, a private movie theater, and a sprawling layout of 11 bedrooms and 18 bathrooms.

A Record-Breaking Moment

After years of fluctuating market activity, the Steinbergs made the decision to sell. Initially listed in 2009 for $50 million, the property’s price and market presence ebbed and flowed over the years. Its most recent listing, in 2022-23, set the asking price at $29.9 million before the estate was ultimately sold in a private transaction for $31.5 million, making it the highest grossing sale in Greenwich in 2024.
