490 North Street in Greenwich, Connecticut, is a 6,725-square-foot home designed by modernist architect Charles Gwathmey. Originally a 200-year-old barn, it was transformed in the 1970s, reflecting Gwathmey’s distinctive style while preserving elements of the original structure. It’s now listed at $4,595,000 (as of 3/17/2025)

Charles Gwathmey (1938–2009), a member of the “New York Five,” was known for his modernist designs. His work is defined by clean geometric forms, open spaces, and an innovative use of materials—all evident at 490 North Street. Some of his most notable projects include the Guggenheim Museum addition in New York City, the Gwathmey Residence and Studio in Long Island, and a striking waterfront property at 1095 Pequot Avenue in Southport, Connecticut. Each of these designs reflects his signature approach to blending bold architectural elements with functionality.

Gwathmey converted the barn into his own residence in 1973, blending modernist elements with the rustic structure. His redesign introduced high ceilings, large expanses of glass, and a sculptural staircase encased in a silo. The current owners expanded on his vision with glass-brick walls and corrugated metal cladding while maintaining the home’s architectural integrity.

At the center of the home is a 30×35-foot Great Room, filled with natural light and framed by original wooden beams that showcase its barn origins. A large fireplace anchors the space.

The main level includes a spacious kitchen and dinette that connect the Great Room to a private wing with three bedrooms and two and a half baths. The upper level is dedicated to the primary suite, which features two full baths, a sitting room, wet bar, and office. The lower level includes a family room, wine room, and kitchenette that leads to a backyard with a pool, spa, built-in grill, fire pit, and covered seating area with a bar.

490 North Street is a ten-minute drive from downtown Greenwich, close to top schools, golf courses, and other amenities.
