Our Take

33 Cannon Road in Wilton is a Greek Revival home with a history as the Lockwood Brown Academy. Original period details and custom millwork are paired with modernization and current amenities. Formal living and dining spaces accompany six bedrooms, most ensuite, plus flex spaces for entertainment, fitness, office use, and visiting guests across four finished floors. The expansive, flat grounds offer potential for a pool, pickleball, padel, tennis, sport court, or ADU/barn.

Historic Profile

33 Cannon Road was built in 1857 for Benjamin F. Brown’s boarding school. Brown succeeded Aaron B. Lockwood, whose nearby academy had opened in 1851. By 1870, Brown’s household included twelve boys aged eight to nineteen and another teacher, alongside his family.

The substantial three-story building has clapboard siding and a high brick basement with brownstone window lintels. Its formal Greek Revival entrance combines flat pilasters and a lintel with sidelights and a transom. These features distinguish the former school from the smaller domestic buildings around it.

In 1924, a Methodist deaconess association acquired the property, which became known as the Elderly Ladies Home. Dr. Herbert Ingram acquired it in 1937. Now a private residence, the building contributes to the Cannondale Historic District, which entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Research note: The Wilton Historical Society and National Register nomination date the surviving building to 1857. Other sources give 1800. Separate state and local designations remain unconfirmed.

Source detail: Wilton’s municipal records identify permit types, categories and dates, but do not include public work descriptions for these records.

Interpretation note: This matched record set reflects only the municipal data currently imported; it is not a claim that no other work occurred.

How we compile this. The source is Wilton municipal permit records. These records are imported periodically and are not a live feed from the town. A permit’s presence does not, by itself, confirm that work was completed or passed final inspection. Dates shown are issue dates unless identified otherwise. Descriptions may be lightly edited for readability without changing material details. Dollar amounts are town-reported project costs or permit valuations, not estimates of the property’s market value.
