Some homes are built for the future, and some pay homage to the past. The Georgian Colonial at 545 Indian Field Road in Greenwich, CT, is a rare example of both. Built in 2015, this 12,000-square-foot waterfront estate was designed to echo a 1928 mansion that once stood on the property. With six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a private beach, dock, pool, and sweeping views, the home blends old-world elegance with modern craftsmanship. It is currently listed for sale at $49,500,000 (as of 2/28/2025).

The original home was owned by Kingsley Kunhardt, a financier who ran the Guaranty Trust Company, which later merged with J.P. Morgan to form what became Morgan Guaranty Trust. Kunhardt’s time in the home was tragically cut short when he suffered a fatal heart attack at an English Springer Spaniel Field Trial.

Decades later, the estate passed into the hands of Ole Skaarup, a shipping magnate whose innovations in dry bulk cargo ship design revolutionized the industry. His “OS” ships introduced wide cargo holds with sloping sides for faster unloading—technology that reshaped maritime logistics.

When new owners acquired the property in 2012 for $10.6 million, they intended to restore the 1928 home. However, structural concerns led them to rebuild it from the ground up while maintaining the architectural integrity of the original. Architect Cormac Byrne oversaw the design.

Positioned on 1.6 acres, the home was built to maximize its waterfront views, with French doors on the main level opening onto stone-paved waterside terraces. Inside, every detail is scaled for grand entertaining. The second floor has hand-painted Venetian plaster detailing, two dressing rooms, a primary bedroom with a private balcony, and a large bathroom with a built-in sauna. The third floor offers additional bedrooms and a playroom.
