122 Woods End Road

At 122 Woods End Road, the Latham House is a late-1960s design by Richard Bergmann for Ernest and Chaillie Latham, overlooking the Noroton River. Paired, steeply pitched roofs and broad windows distinguish its architectural profile.

The commission helped launch Bergmann’s independent practice. The Lathams owned the Silvermine house that he and his wife were renting and offered it to him in exchange for designing their new home. With encouragement from his employer, Eliot Noyes, Bergmann took on the project and established his own firm in 1967. The Latham House was his first house-design commission.

Decades later, Bergmann returned to design an addition for another owner, revisiting portions of the original scheme that the Lathams had been unable to afford. The property therefore connects the beginning of his residential career with a later opportunity to develop the same design. It remains part of the group of mid-century modern homes recognized by the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society.
