In Mystic, Connecticut, a 200-year-old sea captain’s house has taken on a new role as a boutique luxury inn set just off the Mystic River.
The building dates to around 1809, when Captain John Anthony Wolfe constructed it along what was then an active stretch of shipyards. The location was practical, placing him close to the docks and the whaling trade that defined Mystic at the time.
As the town evolved, the house did as well. It expanded over time and was eventually converted into office space, losing much of its original character in the process.
The latest chapter is a complete gut renovation that preserved the landmarked exterior. Inside, the structure was fully reworked, addressing structural wear, uneven framing, and the accumulated layers of two centuries of construction to create a cohesive, livable space.
The result is the Mystic River Inn, a seven-suite property. Each suite follows a consistent layout with one bedroom and one bathroom, finished with marble baths, wood floors, and Kohler fixtures. All include flat-screen televisions, in-room coffee stations, complimentary Wi-Fi, and on-site parking. Housekeeping services are available as needed.
Tucked just off the main stretch at 3 Gravel Street, the inn sits within easy reach of the riverfront while remaining slightly removed from heavier foot traffic.
